Spice Girls
My first day as Assistant Commissioner at Virgin Records - under the tutelage of legendary Head of Video Carole Burton-Fairbrother - was the one-take shoot for Wannabe, directed by Johan Camitz (RIP).
We stood there watching Geri wobble-walk down the steps of what’s now the St Pancras Hotel in towering Westwood heels, thinking, fuck, there’s nowhere to hide with a one-take video. Thankfully, the girls’ fuck-it approach to Westwood heels became the whole point. It was messy, proto-Brat, girl-power realness (...plus, it’s actually two takes stitched together.)
From that wonderfully ridiculous first day, I assisted Carole on pretty much all the videos from the Spice Girls albums Spice, Spiceworld, and Forever.
I also worked across Mel C’s debut solo album, Northern Star, Victoria Beckham’s first solo single, “Out of Your Mind”, and Mel B’s debut solo album, Hot.
I even directed one of the videos from that album for Mel B, “Lullaby”. Why not!
One Hour of Girl Power
I also produced the documentary, One Hour of Girl Power, at the height of Spice Girls mania, just at the moment when their first album had exploded around the world.
It was the fastest-selling music documentary of all time at the time, apparently. Go figure!
