Between 1994-1996, I worked at Propaganda Films as a runner, researcher, PA, treatment writer, and everything else besides. Propaganda, and subsidiary Satellite, was home to some of the greatest music video directors of all time, Mark Romanek, Spike Jonze (just starting out), and David Fincher, to name three, but it was Stéphane Sednaoui who had the biggest effect on me, and encouraged me creatively at the time. Stéphane was completely instinctive. He came from photography, and you could feel it. His early vids were essentially animated stills, the camera barely moving while everything inside the frame vibrated with life. He used colour, light, and the human body in ways no one else did, luminous paint, phosphorescent skin, 6.25 frame rate for blur effects, creating images that wedged in your brain. Not only that, he was a trip to be around. At the time, he dressed like a holy man on acid and was dating Björk. I worked with him on numerous videos for Björk, Tricky, Traci Lords, U2, and more. I loved every minute.
